Depression is far more common than most people realize. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), nearly one in four adults in the U.S.—about 57.8 million people—experienced some form of mental illness in 2021. Within that number, 21 million adults, or 8.3%, had at least one major depressive episode. Those aren’t just statistics—they represent real people, many of them silently carrying a burden that feels impossible to shake.

And yet, less than half of adults with mental illness received treatment that same year. Millions of people who could be finding relief, healing, and hope are instead trying to push through on their own.
Here’s the truth: depression doesn’t just “go away” if you ignore it. Untreated depression is linked to higher rates of unemployment, strained relationships, poor academic performance, and even serious physical health issues. People with depression face a 40% higher risk of developing cardiovascular or metabolic diseases. In other words, your mental health is your physical health—and neglecting one harms the other.
But there’s good news. Treatment works. Therapy helps uncover and shift the patterns that keep you stuck in cycles of hopelessness. Medication, when needed, can reduce symptoms enough for you to regain balance. And the combination of therapy, support, and lifestyle changes is proven to be the most effective path to recovery. Beyond the research, I’ve seen it in my own practice: people rediscovering motivation, reconnecting with loved ones, and learning to experience joy again.
It’s easy to believe that you should wait until things “get bad enough.” But ask yourself—how much longer do you want depression to dictate your sleep, your energy, your confidence, or your relationships? Every day you wait is a day lost to the illness. Every day you take action is a step toward reclaiming your life.
If depression has been weighing you down, I invite you to take the first step today. You don’t have to navigate this alone. As a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, I work with individuals and families to find lasting relief and renewed hope. Together, we can create a plan tailored to your needs so you can move from surviving to thriving.
The statistics are sobering, but they don’t define your future. Reaching out for treatment does. Let’s start that journey—because you deserve more than to simply get by. You deserve to feel alive again.
You don’t need to wait until things feel overwhelming. Sometimes the earliest steps—just one conversation, one appointment—can shift the course of your teenager's life in meaningful ways. Call me or text me at 417-xxx-xxx or email me at shirahearnlmft@gmail.com for an appointment.
